The board of zoning appeals (BZA) is judiciary in nature with the authority to consider applications for variances, conditional uses and appeals. The BZA operates under the authority of ORC §519 and the members may deliberate on their decisions privately after all of the evidence on each case in a public hearing has been received and heard. The BZA must then return to the public meeting to render their decision. The BZA’s decision is final and appeal-able only to a court of common pleas. Each member is appointed by the township trustees for a five-year term and an alternate member is appointed for a one-year term. All members must be a resident of the unincorporated area of Jefferson Township.
